Shear Transport Coefficients from Gauge/Gravity Correspondence
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the shear mode in the gauge/gravity correspondence at finite temperature. First, we confirm the general formula for the shear viscosity in an arbitrary background metric which includes a black hole in the fifth dimension. We then derive a general formula for the shear mode relaxation time which appears in the theory of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics; it agrees with known expressions in the limit of conformal fields. These results may be useful in relativistic viscous fluid descriptions of high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC. PACS numbers: 11.25.Tq, 12.38.Lg, 12.38.Mh, 47.75.+f, 11.10.Wx

Transport coefficients of strongly coupled gauge theories: insights from string theory
The transport properties of certain strongly coupled thermal gauge theories can be determined from their effective description in terms of gravity or superstring theory duals. Here we provide a short summary of the results for the shear and bulk viscosity, charge diffusion constant, and the speed of sound in supersymmetric strongly interacting plasmas. We also outline a general algorithm for co...
متن کاملUniversality of second order transport coefficients from the gauge-string duality
We consider the strongly coupled limit of conformal gauge theory plasmas with conserved U(1) charges which have a gravity dual. We show that, under mild restrictions, the second order transport coefficients of such theories satisfy a universal relation among themselves, similar to the shear viscosity to entropy ratio. متن کاملGravity & Hydrodynamics: Lectures on the fluid-gravity correspondence
We discuss recent developments in the hydrodynamic description of strongly coupled conformal field theories using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular, we review aspects of the fluid-gravity correspondence which provides a map between a class of inhomogeneous, dynamical, black hole solutions in asymptotically AdS spacetimes and arbitrary fluid flows in the strongly interacting boundary fie...
متن کاملTransport coefficients, spectral functions and the lattice
Transport coefficients are determined by the slope of spectral functions of composite operators at zero frequency. We study the spectral function relevant for the shear viscosity for arbitrary frequencies in weakly-coupled scalar and nonabelian gauge theories at high temperature and compute the corresponding correlator in euclidean time. We discuss whether nonperturbative values of transport co...
متن کاملThe shear diffusion coefficient for generalized theories of gravity
Near the horizon of a black brane in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and near the AdS boundary, the long-wavelength fluctuations of the metric exhibit hydrodynamic behaviour. The gauge-gravity duality then relates the boundary hydrodynamics for generalized gravity to that of gauge theories with large finite values of ’t Hooft coupling. We discuss, for this framework, the hydrodynamics of the shear m...
